India showed character: Akram
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said India had showed character in the manner in which they beat Pakistan against all odds.
"India really hammered Pakistan, they really did," he told Mobile ESPN after India beat the arch-rivals by six wickets with 47 balls to spare while chasing 300 to win their second straight group game in the STAR Cricket Asia Cup.
Akram had said a day before that the team batting first had a 70 per cent chance of winning the match, but admitted after the result that "India proved me wrong totally".
The pace legend said that the one-sided contest became "embarrassing in the end".
"India won the game against all odds and that shows the character of the side," he said and added that it was always tough to play a "big match in a full house in each other's country" even though cricketing relations between the two countries had improved drastically.
The cricketer-turned-commentator heaped praises on Virender Sehwag and said he hadn't seen a player like the Indian opener ever since he started playing cricket.
"He's got such an eye, he can just stand and hit any ball. Pakistan was lucky that Gautam Gambhir got out early," said Akram, who has maintained that the opening pair of Sehwag and Gambhir is the best in one-day international cricket at present.
He also had encouragement for young Suresh Raina and said he "has the mettle to be a consistently good player".
Wasim came down heavily on the Pakistan bowling attack and said barring Umar Gul, who was ruled out of the game with an injury in the second over, all the other bowlers looked ordinary.
He singled out Shoiab Malik and Younus Khan for their excellent batting, but was absolutely cross with Misbah-ul-Haq's approach.
"Pakistan had a plan, Shoaib played a good innings, Younus looked good and his wicket was an important one.
"Then at number seven in place of Shahid Afridi they sent up Misbah-ul-Haq. I have been noting him for the last six months, that he only blocks and takes singles in the last five to seven overs. He thinks no one realises what he's doing. What he's doing is that he wants to be not out, he is not playing for the team. He needs to slog in the last few overs, Akram said.
