Symonds will have to prove himself

Cricket Australia has said they were happy with Andrew Symonds’ efforts, but he will still have to earn his place in the team.

Symonds was sent back home from Darwin during the home series against Bangladesh after he skipped a compulsory team meeting to go fishing. He was then axed from the squad to tour India for a four-match Test series.

"I've had a couple of chats with him in the last couple of weeks. He understands that actions are the things that are really going to speak for him now and that's what he wants to concentrate on," CA chief executive James Sutherland said about the apology by Symonds and the right noises he made to make amends.

"I've got a really good feeling about the way he is working towards coming back. There's nothing more that he wants right now than to be playing cricket for the Australian cricket team," he was quoted as saying by the 'Courier Mail'.

The CA chief refused to set a date for the return of Symonds who continues to consult psychologists in his rehabilitation programme.

"I don't think there is any set timeline. Andrew has quite rightly been careful not to build any expectations. We are all on the same page in terms of wanting to see Andrew back playing cricket for Australia," Sutherland said.
