Ponting -“bench pressing”

Ponting -“bench pressing”

Australia‘s captain Ricky Ponting is looking down the squad list to turn things round for his team in the 4th Test at Nagpur.

Ponting is now looking to his bench for answers. According to reports from the Herald Tribune, Ricky Ponting backed his batting line up but showed little confidence in his bowling attack in the 3rd Test.

"We've proven in this game (3rd test) that our batting's certainly up to scratch in these conditions.

"The challenge ahead is to take 20 wickets in Nagpur . We've got to look long and hard at the guys on the sidelines - Doug Bollinger, Peter Siddle, and Jason Krejza - and see if we think they can add anything to our bowling group." Ponting said

What was once the best bowling attack in the world now looks depleted in strength. The statistics speak for themselves.

Mitchell Johnson is the only Aussie bowler with any semblance of grit. He has been the leading wicket-taker for the tourists with 12 at 34.58.

Brett Lee with 7 wickets at 57.71 so far in the series mirrors the thoughts of his captain, Ricky Ponting.

"We'll try and experiment with new things. What we've done in the first two Tests probably hasn't worked. If you're being critical about not taking wickets, we haven't achieved that goal," Lee was quoted as saying in the Times of India

The likes of Cameron white (5 at 60.60), Stuart Clarke (2 at 80.50) and Shane Watson (5 at 47.40) have nothing to write home about.

If Ponting can take any consolation, it is the fact that Vidarbha Cricket Association stadium is a new pitch. This will offer a level playing field if anything, going into the final test.

"We understand that the pitch would be new to both us and India . We expect it to assist the pacer in the first couple of days before starting to spin. Hopefully, they would not win toss again and score 600-plus again," Ponting was quoted in the Times of India.

If the series is going to be won, loss or drawn by any side, it is going come down to the grit of the Australians versus the hunger of the Indians.
