Ronchi gets Caribbean call
Wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi will be rushed into the Australian Test squad as back-up for the injured Brad Haddin.
Haddin is battling to overcome a broken finger in time for the third Test against West Indies so Ronchi is in line to make his Test debut in Barbados next week.Australia's national selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said the 27-year-old from Western Australia would join the squad "at the earliest convenience".
"Due to Brad Haddin's injured finger and as a precaution against him missing the third Test and a part of the one-day series, Luke Ronchi will join the Australian touring team," Hilditch said.
"The need for Luke to remain with the squad will be decided as Brad Haddin's fitness becomes clearer."
Ronchi could be handed a baggy green cap in the same Test Australia unveils 25-year-old spinner Beau Casson. Hilditch said Ronchi had earned his call up.
"Luke has had a very strong season in all forms of inter-State cricket and performed very well on the Australia A team's tour at the start of the 2007-08 season," Hilditch said.
"He is ready for any opportunity that may present itself and will benefit greatly from his time in the Australian environment in the West Indies."
Haddin's ill-timed injury comes just two Tests into the 30-year-old's stint behind the stumps for his country. The long-time understudy to Adam Gilchrist is desperate to shake off the effects on the ring finger on his right hand and will be given every chance to prove his fitness.
"At this stage Brad is being monitored very closely by team medical staff," Cricket Australia general manager of cricket Michael Brown said.
"We are confident in the abilities of our medical staff and the processes we have in place to ensure the right decision is made."
Meanwhile, Simon Katich has been cleared to play in the third Test after sitting out the final three days of the second Test with a bruised rib.
