Ponting to deliver Don oration

Cricket Australia has announced that Ricky Ponting will deliver the Sir Donald Bradman Oration in August.

This year's annual event will mark the 100th anniversary of Bradman's birth.

The special centenary dinner will be held at Sydney's Westin Hotel on August 27, 100 years to the day since the greatest player in the game's history was born in the New South Wales town of Bowral.

And Ponting, who is currently in the Caribbean preparing for Friday's Twenty20 clash with the West Indies, says he feels honoured to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Richie Benaud and former Prime Minister John Howard in delivering the address.

"I'm proud to be able to play a formal role in the centenary celebrations for Sir Donald Bradman," said Ponting, who will be the first current player to deliver the address.

"All Australian cricketers grow up learning about the achievements and contribution of Sir Donald, not just his raw statistics but also the way he influenced and contributed to Australian society throughout his lifetime.

"I'm really looking forward to reflecting on how The Don built a platform which must be extended upon by today's cricketers - and indeed society itself.

"If we don't leave the game, or society, better off for being part of it, we have clearly wasted our opportunity.

"The Bradman name is the most powerful in international cricket history and to be a part in his centenary celebrations is quite humbling."

CA chief executive James Sutherland is also looking forward to the dinner and the opportunity it will provide to celebrate Bradman's life.

"The dinner will be one of the most prestigious events this year and we're extremely happy that Ricky Ponting has agreed to play a major role in the event," Sutherland said.

"Sir Donald Bradman is arguably the most famous and celebrated Australian in history and it's important that we acknowledge his legacy in an appropriate manner.

"His records are something that all international cricketers strive to emulate and his influence on Australian cricketers continues to the present day."

As well as Benaud and Howard, the other addresses have been delivered by Sir Michael Parkinson, major general Peter Cosgrove and broadcaster Alan Jones, with the speech giving them a chance to reflect on Bradman's career and the role cricket has played in either their own lives or that of the nation.
