Australia's one-run thrills

World Champions Australia just don't give up. Never! And testimony to that is their five one-run wins in one-day internationals.

Australia escaped from the jaws of defeat to emerge victorious in a thrilling one-run triumph over the West Indies at Basseterre on Friday and the margin of victory was one run.

Basseterre has been a happy hunting ground for the Aussies, who were based here for their 2007 World Cup league matches and posted 300 plus scores in all their three games at this venue. Their total of 282 for four on Friday is the lowest they have posted at this venue, but even that was enough for them.

This is the 21st time that a team has registered a one-run win in the history of one-day cricket and Australia have registered five such victories in the last two decades.

The first one-run win for the Aussies came during their campaign in the 1987 World Cup, also the first time they lifted the Cup. On the receiving end was hosts India at Chennai in a Group A match. Chasing the Aussie total of 270, India was bowled out for 269 in 49.5 overs.

Australia's second such win also came against India, this time though at home during the 1992 World Cup. The hosts batted first and put up 237 for nine at Brisbane and yet again India fell a run short, bowled out in 47 overs.

Two years later, hosts South Africa lost by a run to the Aussies at Bloemfontein and seven year later the same fate befell neighbours Zimbabwe though in Perth.

And on Friday, they beat hosts West Indies by one run to maintain their 100 per cent win record at Basseterre and also record five successive victories against West Indies in the Caribbean.
