Watson: Gilly better than Laxman

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson said newly-appointed Deccan Chargers skipper Adam Gilchrist will do wonders for Hyderabad.

Watson, who was adjudged Man of the Tournament for his outstanding all-round display for Rajasthan Royals in the first edition of the Indian Premier League, welcomed the move to appoint Gilchrist as captain and former Aussie southpaw Darren Lehmann as coach. On Monday, Deccan Chargers dumped Laxman as captain. Lehmann relaced Robin Singh.

"Gilly and Lehmann are excelent partners and both of them will work together to turn around the fortunes ofDeccan Chargers," Watson said in an exclusive chat on Tuesday.

Watson, who is in India for the four-Test series, in place of troubled all-rounder Andrew Symonds, said Lehmann is a good coach.

"He (Lehmann) has a fantastic understanding of the mix of Indo-Australian culture and he can incorporate that to pep up the Chargers. Darren was with us in Jaipur for two weeks during the IPL and did an excellent job.

"I am sure Deccan Chargers will be well served with Gilly and Lehmann in charge," indirectly indicating Laxman had little role to play in T20 cricket.

In what turned out to be a horrible season, Hyderabad, one of the biggest spending teams, managed to win only two of the 14 games, with Gilchrist leading the team in eight of the matches after skipper Laxman was benched due to an injury.

Laxman had recently come under heavy fire from Chargers' teammate and Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who said the Indian middle order batsman lacked a basic understanding of T20.
