Pak T20: Afridi stars in Dolphins' win
Shahid Afridi put on an all-round show to lead the Karachi Dolphins to an eight-run win over the Faisalabad Wolves.
Afridi first added crucial 28 runs off just 12 balls to help his side set a target of 156 and followed that up with some tidy spin bowling and two wickets to edge out the Wolves, who were led by Misbah-ul-Haq.
Batting first, Karachi slipped to 97 for four after openers Khurram Manzoor and Khalid Latif put on 58 runs for the first wicket. It was at this time that Afridi's innings provided the much needed impetus to his team.
Faisalabad faltered early in the chase before No. 3 Mohammad Salman fought back with a tidy 48 before he was dismissed by Afridi. The Karachi bowlers kept a tight leash on the Wolves and even though Misbah struck four huge sixes in his 31-ball 48, it just wans't enough to seal the match.
This was the Dolphins' second straight win in the tournament. They had earlier beaten Lahore Eagles on Saturday. For the Wolves, their win-loss record at present stands at 1-1.
In another match of the National Twenty20 Cup, the winner of which will feature in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 in December, the Rawalpindi Rams handed the Quetta Bears their second straight defeat in as many days.
Quetta's decision to field seemed justified when pacer Gauhar Faiz helped reduce Rawalpindi to 59 for five, but all rounder Yasir Arafat and wicketkeeper Jamal Anwar gave the innings some impetus. Arafat hit 35 from 26 balls and Anwar finished unbeaten on an identical score. Off spinner Naseer Khan took three for 31 as Rawalpindi were bowled out for 142 in 20 overs.
Quetta's chase never got off the blocks as the new ball duo of Arafat and Sohail Tanvir ran through the top order to reduce them to four for 18 in no time. They soon slipped to 46 for six and were finally bowled out for 67 in 15.3 overs.
Arafat and Tanvir picked up three wickets each, while Mohammad Aamer and Yasim Murtaza shared four as the Rams registered a 75-run win.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Hawks also started their campaign on a winning note as they beat the Karachi Zebras by 30 runs.
Batting first, Hyderabad were reduced to 28 for three before Rizwan Ahmed and Shahid Qmbrani put on a fine rescue act. While Ahmed top scored with 57, Qambrani finished unbeaten on 48. They finally managed to post 169 for four.
Former international Shadab Kabir (37) and Shahzaib Hasan made a belligerent start to their chase, but once he was run out, the other wickets fell like nine pins for just 49 runs and at the end they could only muster 139 for nine.
In the fourth match, the Multan Tigers defeated the Peshawar Panthers by seven wickets. Peshawar only made 103 in 19.3 overs. In reply Multan lost two early wickets but Sohaib Maqsood (39) and Saeed Anwar jnr (32 not out) finished the job with ease.
