Sussex hope to keep Smith

Sussex are poised to hold talks with IPL side Deccan Chargers to see who Dwayne Smith plays for in the Champions League.

Smith smashed 59 off only 26 deliveries with seven fours and three sixes to inspire the Sharks to a 63-run success over Somerset Sabres in the final at Edgbaston on Saturday.

He signed a three-year contract with Sussex last season but also linked up with the Chargers for the second season of the IPL and helped them qualify for the Champions League in India.

Sussex skipper Michael Yardy said: "I am not 100 per cent sure what the situation is regarding Dwayne and the Champions League. It would be nice to have him.

"When you go to a big competition like the Champions League, you want to have your top Twenty20 players available.

"Dwayne is certainly one of those so we will have to see where that takes us. I am sure it will be discussed within the next few weeks with the Deccan Chargers to see where everything stands."

England one-day player Yardy is relishing the prospect of competing for a six million dollar jackpot.

He said: "I remember speaking to Matt Prior before the first one and he was saying about the hype in India before that tournament and how big an event it is.

"I've played in India and you know how partisan they are about their cricket and it is something to really look forward to and we want to go over there and do ourselves justice.

"I am sure we will have a bit of time out there to prepare. There are big figures of money being bandied around and that is fantastic. I think it is great for cricket.

"Twenty20 is moving the goalposts and, for us as county cricketers, it is great to have the opportunity to earn that type of money."

Yardy feels Sussex's first Twenty20 Cup triumph helped ease the pain of losing the Friends Provident Trophy final last month to Hampshire at Lord's.

And he believes the dismissal of on song Marcus Trescothick in the final for was the crucial factor

Yardy said: "I think we learnt a lot from the FPT final. Our preparation was very good for that match. It was just the mental side of things and coping with big occasions.

"It is a completely different kettle of fish when you are playing in front of big crowds at Lord's and Edgbaston with all the hype and things like that.

"It takes a bit of getting used to and we dealt with it really well today.

"Getting Trescothick out was crucial. He is obviously a massive wicket He is an international top quality batsman even though he is not playing international cricket anymore."

Somerset skipper Justin Langer hailed the impact of Smith but is also looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Champions League.

He said: "It was a brilliant innings. He is also with the Deccan Chargers and he had an impact there as well.

"He knows how to play Twenty20 cricket and, when someone hits the ball as hard and as far as he does, you literally can't do much about it.

"He played well, he is a brilliant athlete and a good all-round cricketer."

"We will look forward now to the Champions League. It is nice to test yourself under pressure and there will certainly be pressure in India."
