McGrath happy to play his part

Glenn McGrath was pleased to have played his part in Delhi Daredevils' 50-run win over Wayamba XI in the Airtel CLT20.

The Daredevils, who had lost their opening match against the Victoria Bushrangers, needed a victory against the Sri Lankan side to stay in the competition.

Virender Sehwag blasted 66 at the top of the order and Dinesh Karthik made 61 as the home side powered to a massive 170 for five on a pitch on which Simon Katich's New South Wales Blues had managed only 130 hours earlier.

Fast bowler Dirk Nannes then claimed four wickets and the 39-year-old McGrath chipped in with a typically incisive and miserly two for 20 from four overs as the Daredevils cruised to a 50-run win.

McGrath had been ignored by the Daredevils for the IPL in South Africa and was dropped from the final Champions League squad although he had made the long list.

But a spate of high-profile pull-outs - AB de Villiers, Daniel Vettori and Paul Collingwood all sustained injuries in the Champions Trophy - had left the Daredevils short of an overseas player for the tournament.

McGrath admitted he had played little competitive cricket in the run-up to the Champions League competition.

"We had a couple of practice matches before the semi-final in the IPL in South Africa," he said.

"I can't complain, I got the call and I had not done any bowling or training until I arrived here.

"The boys did a very good job, the wicket was a little bit slow and all I had to do was hit those lengths.

"I could always land the ball pretty well, but I wasn't quick and that's something I'd rather be.

"But it's good to be out here playing and to be a part of a pretty good win."

While the Daredevils' progress to the second round still hinges on the outcome of Wayamba's match against Victoria, McGrath believed the Delhi side were in a good position.

He said: "Wayamba will have to play Victoria next and they are a pretty good unit.

"But this win puts us in a very good position going forward into the next round."

All three IPL teams in the 12-team contest had lost their first matches, but the Daredevils' skipper Gautam Gambhir rubbished suggestions that the IPL teams were slow starters.

"I think we just didn't play well enough in the first game and I believe we were about 20 or 30 runs short in that game," he said.

"I think having already played a game here, it was an advantage in this game against Wayamba.

"I thought 130 was a good total on this track but Dinesh Karthik batted magnificently and we got to 170 which was pretty welcome.

"It gave the bowlers a lot of room and they were very good today as well."
