NSW coach hails Katich leadership

espnstar.com’s Rajarshi Gupta spoke to NSW Blues coach Matthew Mott after his wards won the final of the Airtel CL T20.

Mott attributed the victory to compact team effort and the fine leadership shown by Simon Katich.

"The triumph is a tribute to the way Simon has led the boys. In fact, all the seniors showed their class and their enthusiasm rubbed off on the lesser experienced guys."

Mott was also happy with the way Brett Lee and Steven Smith guided the side out of trouble after they were down in the dumps at 83 for six.

"Smith and Lee played really well under pressure to get us out of trouble and that set the tone for the rest of the match.

Imagine two bowlers coming to the fore when the batsmen failed to deliver. That is team work and as a coach I could not be happier.

"Lee has been outstanding throughout the tournament and his leadership with the ball has been amazing."

The coach admitted to being nervous when off-spinner Nathan Hauritz tossed one up to Kieron Pollard, who was then held by Brett Lee near the boundary ropes.

"I had my heart in the mouth. Pollard has just blasted the earlier one for a six and I thought that was on its way too but Lee took a stunning catch and that was it."

Mott felt the team believed in itself and that was the biggest aspect of a successful campaign in India over the last two weeks.

"Everyone worked as a unit and supported each other. That made my job as a coach much easier. The boys knew their roles and did what they were asked to."

A lot had been expected of the New South Wales Blues before the tournament had kicked off and the team lived up to all its hype with clinical precision.

The only blip in the radar came against the same opponents in a Super Eights clash but even the coach would admit that defeat was well timed. At least his team was prepared for the Pollard storm.
