"Wayamba eager to make an impact"
Mainstay of Sri Lanka’s batting order Mahela Jayawardene has reincarnated himself as an explosive T20 batsman during the IPL season three.
Playing a key role in Wayamba’s team that would compete with the best in Airtel Champions League, Jayawardene reveals his journey in a Star Cricket program.
Q. So, Mahela, tell us about your role models when you were a kid? Who inspired you to play cricket?
A.Well, I had quite a many role models. Unfortunately, there was not much cricket on TV back then. Limited people had access to televisions and only a few matches were shown. The person who had a big influence on me was none other than Arjuna Ranatunga. If I had to pick one, he would be my role model. It was a dream come true when I got a chance to play alongside him, that was in the wee hours of his career. Besides him, a lot of other players have had an influence over me.
Q. What does the Airtel Champions League T20 means for Wayamba and how is it different this time around?
A.Last tournament was a great experience for the squad. We were the underdogs and not many people knew us. It was also a very good stage for us to prove ourselves. All in all, we gained great experience from the tournament. This time though, we are a solid team. We are not new to the competition like we were the last time. We know what is to be expected from other teams. Wayamaba is a mix of international starshave and up coming young talent. We will make a big impact this season.
Q. What went wrong last season?
A.Our team lacked the experience. It is all about soaking pressure. We had a game-plan which did not work last time. For example, against Daredevils we failed to capitalise on the chances that came along and crumbled under pressure. Maybe because it was the first time we were playing at such a big stage. We did not know what to expect of others. Now guys have learnt and we will only move forward from there. This time we are a very mature team and I am confident that we can put cope up with the pressure.
Q. How are you preparing for South African conditions?
A.Well, India is a much suited place for spinners. However, the pitches in South Africa favour the seamers. We have a good pace attack as well. Our pacers play for Sri Lanka national team. We just need to get our game-plan right and go out and see what we can do. Our ambition is to go all the way. But we also want to have fun and enjoy our game.
Q. Well, how would you describe Mahela Jayawardene, on and off the pitch?
A. On the pitch, I have always thrived to be a batsman. I have enjoyed all the challenges which have come my way. I always like to push myself to the limit and keep improving.
Off the pitch, I am quiet and I like to lead a normal life. I like to spend time with my friends and family. I would also love to shop on streets, like normal people do.
