"Indian team has great balance"

In an exclusive interview with espnstar.com, Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori spoke on the current India-New Zealand series.

Q. How much did you miss the experienced cricketers in the series against India?

A. No point in lamenting over a dead issue. Experienced cricketers do bring value to any team. I do not want to crib about it now.

Q. Are you enjoying captaincy? Did you face any problem in the bowling department during the recent series?

A. Of course I am enjoying captaincy. Every cricketer who plays for the country has an ambition of becoming a captain of the national side. I am no exception. Our bowling has not been as good as we expected. There were some new faces in the team and I must tell you that they tried their best. I am hopeful they will mature soon and win matches for New Zealand in the near future.

Q. Do you think this is the best Indian team you played against?

A. This Indian team has great balance. The Indian batsmen were getting runs consistently. But it is their bowlers who have improved by leaps and bounds recently. The success story of the Indian team tells us the balance of the side. However, despite that we fought.

Q. Are you happy with the pitches that have been provided in the series?

A. This is also one of those aspects that we have no control on. The wickets were batsman-friendly with some balance. For instance, I have never played on such a wicket at Basin Reserve before.

Q. A lot of people are of the opinion that the current New Zealand team is a better team in the limited over cricket as compared to Tests. Do you agree?

A. Unfortunately we do not play good number of Test matches in a year like most other teams. A team can learn and improve only if they can participate at the top level. We are facing this problem for quite some time. Hopefully, the situation will improve.

Q. All-rounders have been the key in the New Zealand team. Do you see any such all-rounders in the team at the moment?

A. Jocob Oram, Brendan McCullum and Scot Styris did make a huge difference. Oram would be back soon. Jessie Ryder is gradually shaping up as a good all-rounder. I am sure we will have a few good all-rounders in our team soon.
