Ashraful: We lack experience

A heartbroken Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful speaks exclusively to espnstar.com after his team's exit from the ICC World Twenty20.

It took Ireland to knock out the Bangla Tigers out of the ICC World Twenty, two years after Ashraful's boys had played giant-killers, knocking India out of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Ashraful and his team have a lot to ponder over the next few months. He starts off, sharing some of his thoughts with espnstar.com.

Q: What went wrong for you?

MA: Basically, we lost due to batting failures. We decided to score 60 runs in the first six overs and that was the strategy for this tournament and in order to do that the top three of our batting line up would go after the bowling. We nearly achieved that target but at the same time lost wickets at a regular interval.

On top of that, if you cannot continuously score against a team like India, you are in for trouble.

Q: Please let us know why you were so confident of reaching the Super Eight stage of the ICC World Twenty20?

MA: Before we lost to India, we had played five warm-up games here in England, out of which we won two but lost three narrowly. For instance, we lost to New Zealand and Sri Lanka in the last ball. We could have won those two games.

Q: Do you find any weakness in your team?

MA: We play lesser number of games than other teams so we lack experience. I am sure you will agree that experience plays a major role in the international circuit. We will try to minimise the number of mistakes that we made in this tournament.

Q: Were you under any pressure when you played against a strong opponent like India?

MA: We have always done a good job against India. Infact, India lost the plot against us in the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. We take pride in the fact that India could not qualify for the next stage, thanks to us. We used that victory as a pep-deck in our team meeting in this tournament. So there was no additional pressure when we went to play against India.
