"‘Younis move counterproductive"
ESPN STAR Sports expert Sanjay Manjrekar speaks to Mobile ESPN’s Abhishek Dinman in a telephonic chat from London.
Pakistan cricket never ceases to surprise, not even when they are at the top of the world. Emotional decisions that borders on unprofessionalism, indiscipline and administrative blunders have time and again ruined Pakistan cricket. At a time when Pakistan had just won the world championship, no one was expecting Younis Khan to quit T20 cricket. But then that’s Pakistan cricket for you.
Just a few hours ago at Lord’s, Sanjay Manjrekar was at the Pakistan dugout watching an euphoric team celebrate the World Cup win. “I beg your pardon,” Manjrekar said when told about Younis’ decision.
Shocked and disappointed, Manjrekar said Younis stunning decision will set back Pakistan cricket that till recently suffered from identity crisis. “At a time when Pakistan is resurrecting themselves, Younis’ decision does not bode well. It is ill-timed,” Manjrekar would say.
Where's the logic?
“I don’t understand the logic behind it. Pakistan need good leadership. Now here is a captain who has won a tournament so he automatically gets the respect of the players. By resigning, I think he has not helped Pakistan's cause,” Manjrekar said.
Reiterating his disappointment at Younis’ sudden decision, Manjrekar said, “I don’t think it is a great move. But it is something that Younis has a tendency to do. He has done things like this in the past when he shocked every one by stepping down most unexpectedly.”
Manjrekar continued: “Younis does such things for reasons that are not really valid. This is what Pakistan didn’t really need, especially at this moment of triumph. This is what Pakistan could have done without.”
