‘Md Aamer new find for Pak’
Wasim Akram tells Mobile ESPN’s Faisal Kamal 17-year-old Mohammed Aamer has been the find for Pakistan in the ICC World Twenty20.
Even as Pakistan come to terms with Younis Khan’s sudden decision to quit Twenty20 international cricket, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram says it’s time to move on and talk about the good things to emerge from the country’s World Cup-winning campaign in the last three weeks.
Watch out for Mohammed Aamer, says the former swing king. The lithe Rawalpindi lad triggered Sri Lanka’s collapse in the T20 World Cup on Sunday as he found extra bounce on a Lords wicket.
Aamer rocked Man of the Tournament Tillakaratne Dilshan with successive short-pitched balls and then the Lankan played the fatal scoop shot to hole out at short fine-leg for 0. Lanka collapsed thereafter and the rest is history.
Aamer is the man to watch out for
“Look out for this young man. I spotted him along with Mudassar Nazar and Aaqib Javed two years ago at a training camp. He played for Pakistan under-19 and now he is opening the attack. He is definitely promising,” Akram said from Manchester.
“For someone who can consistently bowl at 90 miles an hour, Aamer is definitely cut out for pace bowling. He is tall and need to put on some weight to gain extra power,” Akram said, adding: “Aamer has already replaced Sohail Tanvir in the line-up and if he can maintain his fitness, then Tanvir may not make the team again.”
The gangling Rawalpindi youngster’s career was once hit by the deadly dengue virus but a 55-wicket first class debut season was enough for him to get a national call-up for the T20 world championship.
“He will get more wickets with the Kookaburra ball. He has a natural outswinger. With a Kookaburra, he will get the ball to come in and that that will be even more deadly,” says Akram.
Aamer is among the 15-member squad for Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka in July. Lankan batsmen will treat him with respect for sure. Dilshan certainly will.
