Gilly: Tough challenges ahead

Deccan Chargers skipper Adam Gilchrist talks about Airtel CLT20 and more in an exclusive chat with espnstar.com.

By Sudeer Mahavaadi

Q: How prepared Deccan Charges are for the Airtel Champions League?
A: We have a good side. But anything is possible. We have got tough teams participating in the tournament, so it is going to be a challenge for all. The two Australian teams are also very strong. There are well-known names in all teams, not just in their countries but in the cricketing world. We have tough challenges ahead.

Q: What are the tournament's prospects?
A: It has the potential to grow and become one of the major tournaments in the world of cricket, particularly in domestic type of competitions. You, however, have to maintain that your main goal is to play for your country. Then you take the next step and enter club cricket. Airtel Champions League has got a chance to grow globally and increase the profile of cricket.

Q: What if it becomes a global tourney?
A: That is the appeal of the Airtel Champions league. It can move around the world. IPL is an Indian-based competition. It has already grown to be one of the top sports brands in the world. We can take this competition around the world as well. I am sure every country can benefit from that. It will be a positive thing for cricket.

Have you selected your Super Selector team?

Q: We have seen countries struggling on different surfaces. Keeping that in mind how can it help the youngsters?
A: Every team is desperate to be a part of this concept. They are certainly going to be exposed to the conditions. There are nine outside teams. It is possible that we might be playing in Australia, West Indies and New Zealand in some years. It will be a great chance for the youngsters to hone their skills. It can also increase the domestic level competition. The teams will have to fight more in the domestic level to get an entry into this competition.

Q: How will you rate Tim Paine?
A: Paine is fantastic, but Haddin is an outstanding cricketer. The keeping and batting transition is always important and in that area Paine looks good now. The good thing is we have good talent in that area, which will help Australia become one of the best teams.
