Maharoof: We will have a tough time
Espnstar.com’s Rajarshi Gupta caught up with Sri Lankan and Wayamba all-rounder Farveez Maharoof for an exclusive chat.
Not unlike a lot of his country men, the tall bowling all-rounder is a gentleman. There was an air of silent determination as he strolled around in the hotel lobby before heading to a practice match at Palam Ground.
Poised and calm he may well be but the Delhi Daredevils recruit, who is turning up for his home team knows Wayamba are in for a tough time with Victoria Bushrangers and the Daredevils in their group.
"There are two difficult teams in the groups and we will have a tough time ahead of us. But I am a Delhi Daredevil too and I am aware of the conditions that exist here (in Delhi) as do a lot of my colleagues who have played in India so often."
Maharoof said it was good to be back in Delhi and admitted the cricket on show would be tough and competitive.
Wayamba maybe unknown to a lot of cricket fans gearing up to take in the wonders of the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 but they sure do have some gems in the team.
Situated in the North West Province of Sri Lanka, it is a beautiful island with some glorious cricketing talent and Mahela Jayawardene is one of them, just one of them.
As are mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and skipper Jehan Mubarak.
Quiet a team is it not? And a brilliant spin attack too. Mubarak glows. "Yes, we have two very good spinners and some great players who are well aware of what it takes to play in India. We are all geared up and know the enormity of the task at hand."

Mahroof felt their spinners will be dangerous in Indian conditions and with wickets in India being so similar to the ones back home in Sri Lanka, everyone in the team knows what to expect.
The Sri Lankans will have advantages that other foreign teams may not have. With all the brouhaha of the IPL teams and home conditions, Wayamba will know they are not too far off the mark as well. A lot of their players have played in the IPL too. And they have two spinners in Mendis and Herath that can rattle the best of batting sides on any wicket.
In a team like this, therefore, talk will veer towards how much goes into exchanging notes before embarking on a high-profile tournament.

"Sharing insights is part and parcel of the game. We have a very balanced team with good bowlers and good batsmen, who can do the job for us. We may have certain advantages but in T20 cricket, whoever plays well for three hours will win."
Watching the Sri Lankans at work on the field is charming. How do they pull it off? They are well-behaved and aggressive and talented. Modern day cricket often does not see too many parallels.
Mahroof has a simple logic: "I think balance is necessary. You got to have a proper way of being aggressive. You have to stay committed and grounded."
The all-rounder feels aggression is more about body langauge and not sledging or humiliating the opponent. "It should reflect in the way you play," Mahroof rounds it up.
Waymaba are a team of charmers. Maharoof, Jayawardene, Mubarak and Mendis will give Indian fans a lot to look forward to. When they play, they play to win. They win matches and win hearts. Such is their way of lives.
The Champions League Twenty20 will be richer for such cricketers to take a shot at glory and tell the world, it means business with a smile.
