Holland excited but nervous
espnstar.com’s Rajarshi Gupta spoke exclusively to Jon Holland, who was added to the Australian ODI squad to tour India.
The 22 year old left-arm spinner is already in the country these days, playing for the Victoria Bushrangers in the Airtel Champions League Twenty20.
As fate would have it, Australia’s National Selection Panel have decided to hold him back in India for a couple of weeks after the T20 extravaganza gets over.

The latest of the Baggy Green’s spinning option to be thrown up against some of the most savage players of spin bowling in the world, Holland is rightly nervous.

“I am nervous, you know. The wickets here are going to be flat and slow and I have heard how good the Indian batsmen are against spinners.”

He will soon see too. Exactly a year after making his debut against South Australia, Holland finds himself out in the big bad world.
India has generally been a spinner’s paradise. Ask Anil Kumble, ask Harbhajan Singh. Now, the conditions can be deceptive too, as can be the wickets. Ask Shane Warne. The legendary Australian leg-spinner will recall a murderous Indian batting line up, which stunned him into submission in the summer of 1998. It is not easy bowling here.

Like all his Victorian team-mates, Holland is a very proud character and he has reasons to cheer as well. Not many get into that Aussie team this early. After a successful defence of the ICC Champions Trophy, few would have been expecting changes in the squad but when it is India, the extra spinner does come handy.
“Dutchy”, (yes most Aussies have nicknames and Holland does too) is a man of destiny. He went from being an uncapped domestic player to become a part of the national team within a year and is spending enough time in India to get used to the wickets here, days before he makes his debut for Australia.
Needless to say, he would also have the benefit of talking to some seasoned pros in the team: “Yes, I have spoken to (Victoria teammate and Kolkata Knight Rider batsman) Brad Hodge and he asked me to keep a cool head. It is very important when you bowl against high quality batsmen, who play spin well. He gave me a fair bit of idea on conditions in India.”
Have you selected your Super Selector team?
For now though, Holland has a lot to think about. The Bushrangers got off to sound start in their Airtel CL T20 campaign against the Delhi Daredevils on Friday and he conceded a mere 10 runs in three overs. If anything, these are signs of things to come.
India will realize that this is not a foreign spinner, who can be tamed early, at least not without a fight.
