"Benson had other reasons to walk out"
Cricket Extra’s Gautam Bhimani and Jatin Sapru spoke to Ian Chappell on Mark Benson walking out and the challenges plaguing Test cricket.
English umpire Mark D. Benson, when walked out of the Adelaide Test during the West- Indies-Australia series, many put the blame on the umpire decision review system (DRS) that had debuted in the series. Though Benson's walking out didn't stall the match, his behaviour attracted more talks about the DRS misuse.
Former Australian player Ian Chappell feels that it was not the umpire decision review system that undermined Benson. "He was already having some problems before coming over to Australia. So, I wouldn't say that the review system is the cause for his return to England," Chappell said.
Chappell himself had been a non supporter of the DRS, which till date is seen with skepticism. "The review system, I didn't really like it when it was talked about. But I think that this system is being wisely used by both the teams, Australia and the West Indies. And, it has so far shown that the umpires get it right most of the time," he added.

Also, Chappell was all praises for the West Indies captain Chris Gayle, who played a smashing innings of 155 not out. "The captain saw it extremely well and he played a really good game. So, he was obviously an inspiration for his team."
Chappell, meanwhile, also predicted that the some of the West Indies players might struggle in playing extra bounce at Perth.
In the days of T20 when test cricket is almost dying, Chappell felt that three-day Test championship format will help salvage the older form of Test cricket. "This is a one way of introducing a world Test championship. And if it suits well you can implement it further. But at this stage three days Test format would be helpful in regaining interest in Test series," Chappell said.
