Virat Kohli to replace Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh injured his right hand during a fielding session, causing concern in the Indian camp ahead of their first match.

Yuvraj was enthusiastically taking part in the fielding session at the University Ground here. But in the process, he ended up hurting his right finger so badly that he couldn't participate in the batting and bowling sessions which were conducted later in the day.

The selectors have chosen Virat Kohli as replacement for Yuvraj who will fly out as soon as formalities are completed.

The left-hander was attended to by physio Nitin Patel before he proceeded for a medical examination.

Team manager Anurag Thakur said the medical examination would determine whether the middle-order batsman has suffered a fracture.

"The tests will show whether he has fractured his finger," he said.

India are already an injury-hit side going into the tournament, missing the services of star opener Virender Sehwag, who is nursing a shoulder problem.

Meanwhile, ICC has confirmed that Virat can replace Yuvraj.

"The ICC has confirmed the event technical committee of the ICC Champions Trophy has approved Kohli as a replacement player for Yuvraj in India's squad for the tournament," an ICC release said.

"The confirmation was conveyed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India on behalf of the event technical committee," it added.

Gambhir to replace Yuvi as vice captain

Opener Gautam Gambhir has been made the vice-captain of India in place of Yuvraj.

Following Yuvraj's injury, Gambhir, who himself is recuperating from a groin injury, was named the vice-captain of the team. Gambhir did not play in the team's only practice match against New Zealand.

India will open their campaign against arch rivals Pakistan on September 26.

Pacer Zaheer Khan is also missing from action due to an injury.
