Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram answers to some of your questions on the ICC Champions Trophy from South Africa.
Way to go readers! Keep them coming. Our inbox was flooded with questions for Wasim and we had to spend hours to pick a few.
Don't lose heart if you don't see your question around. Just keep writing in to us at fanspeak @ espnstar.co.in and the legend will reply.
Here are a few for now.
Q: Do you think India did the right thing by selecting Rahul Dravid for the ICC Champions Trophy? Though he did get 76 against Pakistan, he consumed 103 deliveries, chasing over 300. Do you think that was a big let down for India?
- Prabal Ray, Dubai
Wasim Akram: I think it depends on what team India is thinking. Are they looking at the future or are they just thinking of the present? They didn’t play Rahul Dravid for two years when he was still very much in his prime and now he has been recalled after not playing ODIs for almost two years. So obviously he needs some time to settle back in. He has always been a slow starter in ODI cricket but he is a great player nevertheless. But if you ask me, keeping in mind the 2011 World Cup and the future, Dravid is not the right choice.
Q: Do you think South Africa need to be more innovative on the field alongwith some unorthodox players? What goes wrong with Proteas in ICC events?
- Sathesh P, Chennai
WA: I think they have a psychological problem. In my opinion, on paper, they were the favourites for the Champions Trophy, home ground, home wickets, home crowd and they also had variety in their fast bowling with Steyn and Parnell.
Inspite of that they are losing to all the teams, so obviously it’s a mental problem more than a cricketing problem. Unless they stop thinking about the pressure of being the best side in the world, they will not be able to win anything.
Q: Why is that only Pakistani players play Ajantha Mendis well and not other international teams?
- Ehtisham Zaidi, Lahore
WA: Pakistan have always had many finger spinners. That is the reason they were able to read him (Mendis) early, even on the recent Lanka tour. Mendis bowls like with a tennis ball in finger spin, so that is too prevalent in Pakistan and therefore the batsmen have an idea as to how to counter him. So they play him in only one line, the inside line and are able to play him well, and others not so much.
Q: Do you think Australia’s current squad can be as lethal as the one that won in 2006 in India?
- Manan Bhalerao, India
WA: Australia might not have their great players but mentally, physically and psychologically they are still very strong. They are still a top side in terms of fielding and Ponting and Mike Hussey lend experience to the batting. So they are still a top all round side without McGrath, Warne and Gilchrist.
Q: Why do you think India and Pakistan are so inconsistent with so many talented players in their side?
- Vaibhav, London
WA: Well let me ask this, what is consistent in our countries? The players are part of the same community and the same people. The very systems in place in these two countries do not have any consistency so how can you expect consistency from the players?
