Sangakkara looks to senior players

Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara is banking on the senior players to come good and lift the team's fortunes in ICC World T20.

The ICC World Twenty20 will be Sangakkara's first assignment since taking over from Mahela Jayawardene as captain in March.

The wicketkeeper batsman leads a balanced squad with a mix of youth and experience, but they will need to be at the top of their game as they are grouped alongside Australia and the West Indies in the league stage of the competition.

Sangakkara said the senior players such as Jayawardene, explosive batsman Sanath Jayasuriya and off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan would have to deliver.

"It is the established players who will have to do the bulk of the work," Sangakkara said.

"Everyone in the team should do his part and know his responsibility and if they play to potential there is no reason why we cannot win this tournament.

"Our first task is the two group games against the West Indies and Australia and we have to concentrate on them and move forward."

Match practice an advantage

Sri Lanka's Australian coach Trevor Bayliss shrugged off suggestions that his team had not practised as a unit enough.

Most of Sri Lanka's top players were involved in the Indian Premier League which concluded in South Africa last week.

"We haven't had one session with all the players, but it's the same with every other team," Bayliss said.

"We have been practising with the players who didn't go to the IPL and I don't think it's going to be a distraction for us anyway.

"We are going to be in England for almost two weeks and we've got two practice games during that time.

"There's no better practice like match practice and our leading players have been involved in the IPL.

"So there's no issue and it won't be difficult to get back into the fold."

The tournament will be Sri Lanka's first national assignment since the terrorist attack on the team in Lahore in March, but Bayliss said his team is back to normal.

"I think everyone has recovered after what happened in Lahore," he said.

"When we get into the bus, we'll be a bit nervous I guess, but we are back to normal."
