Fans Speak: Rohit vs Sehwag

Our readers have written back on what they think of Rohit Sharma as an opener and why Virender Sehwag should be back at the top.

Rohit Sharma has taken the ICC World Twenty20 by storm despite the fact that India have played just two warm-up games and their opener against Bangaldesh.

However, the young middle order batsman from Mumbai has raised a few eyebrows with some lusty blows in his three knocks so far. With the dangerous Virender Sehwag sitting out these games due to injury, Indian fans have not missed the booming drives and monsterous lofts over the ropes.

But Sehwag will be Sehwag and that is what, you, our readers on espnstar.com have to say. The best picks follow. Read on.

Dipu Ramakrishnan: Yes Rohit Sharma has really come of age but at this point in time there is no need to think of a replacement for Sehwag.

Sehwag is proven customer and the most devastating player in world cricket when he is in full song. If Sehwag is fit he should open with Gambhir and Rohit can bat at number three or four.

Ashish K K: In my opinion, the latest format of cricket, Twenty20, is not where you play the first five or six overs with a lot of respect for the ball or the bowler. You as a batsman try to get the most out of the fielding restrictions. The opening slot, which is of immense importance in Tests or ODI's, loses its important to a great extent in this format. Thers is no place for classical-Test-openers, which both Viru and Rohit are not.

However the question here is how destructive the batsman is while at the same time making sure he dosen't get out to a reckless shot. It is of course obvious that Viru is one of the most devastating batsmen any bowler can bowl to, but at the same time, is more reckless than careful, and an early blow can demoralise the team. Rohit on the other hand is a calculated risk-taker and he fits better than Viru to open the innings. Viru can use his stand-and-dispatch shots effectively in the fast few overs and hence Viru could contribute more to the team if he plays lower down the order. Rohit's technique is more suitable for the early movement on those green tracks.

Amber Dhavale: Although Rohit has done an excellent job in the opening slot, he can't replace Sehwag because of the terror Sehwag creates in the mind of the bowlers. Bowling is the art of throwing the ball with the use of mind and when someone like Sehwag is taking you on, it is impossible to maintain the composure needed to bowl at the highest level. So even though Rohit is scoring runs at the opening slot, he cannot score them faster than Sehwag and most importantly cannot disturb the line and lenght of good bowlers by attacking play. Saying this does not mean that he cannot play a good bowler and can even dispatch a good ball for a boundary. But like Sehwag? Nahh!!!

Akash Kumar Pandey: Rohit Sharma may have been very successful in the opening slot but the sheer skill factor Sehwag has displayed over the years has made him the most feared opening batsman in world cricket today. Look at the ease with which he has terrorised bowlers across the globe. Moreover, it is unnerving for any bowling attack to see the Gambhir-Sehwag duo at the top and with Rohit coming lower down the order, like he did so successfully for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL, finishing matches clinically, India would benefit immensely.

Our take at espnstar.com:  Rohit Sharma is destructive, yes. He has played like a dream at the top of the order and desite the fact that he plays in the middle order for Mumbai and his IPL team, the Deccan Chargers, Sharma has carved a niche for himself at the top of the pile in MS Dhoni's team. With Virender Sehwag, reportedly not too keen to open the innings, Sharma maybe the best bet Dhoni may have.

However, it needs to be seen what Sehwag has done over the years. He has created mayhem with his power-packed shots and with Gautam Gambhir has given India one of their most destructive opening slots since the days of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. So it makes sense to see Sehwag retain his opening slot and let Sharma send the leather on a wild chase lower down the order. Fire to begin with and firepowder to finish off with. Not a bad combo at all, one would imagine.
