Spinners the rage in Twenty20 cricket
SportsCenter India's Muhammed Ashar Khan looks at how spinners are fast becoming a threat in Twenty20 cricket.
After the Indian Premier League in South Africa, the spin bowlers have overshadowed the performances of their pace counterparts in the World Twenty 20 as well. While the spinners brought about the biggest upset of the tournament by eliminating Australia, the pacers have been taken to the cleaners.
The fortunes of swing bowlers in England seem as unpredictable as the country's weather. The conditions in the World Twenty20 host nation were suited for fast bowlers but it's their less fancied counterparts, spinners who are calling the shots in the tournament.
Spinners Pragyan Ojha, Saeed Ajmal and Ajantha Mendis are amongst the top 5 wicket-takers in the World Twenty20 currently. Tweakers are also the most economical in the tournament. Ian Butler of New Zealand and Trent Johnston of Ireland are the only two pacers in the list of bowlers with an economy rate of less than 6. Besides, no spinner features in the list of bowlers to have given away more than 9 runs an over. Stars like Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Lasith Malinga and Fiedel Edwards have all given away runs in excess of nine an over.
While Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajanta Mendis were instrumental in Australia's early elimination, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal's 3 wickets a piece made it possible for Pakistan to reach the Super 8. With tweakers ruling the roost, apparently the batsmen will have to curb their instinct to go whole hog in the T20 slam-bang format.
With crucial players like Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, Daniel Vettori and Kevin Pietersen nursing injuries, is the slam-bang version of cricket starting to take its toll on the players? You know where to write in with your thoughts. Write in to us at: fanspeak@espnstar.co.in
