India bleeding runs in death overs
SportsCenter India's Muhammed Ashar Khan looks at what could be a potential thorn for India as the ICC World T20 progresses.
India have had an easy draw in the group stage of the World Twenty20, but the business end of the tournament begins tonight for MS Dhonis men. While the defending champions have been impressive with the bat, the performance of their bowlers in the death overs has been a matter of concern.
India have cruised through to the Super 8 but going by the performance of their bowlers in death overs, it seems they have been lucky not to have faced a big team in the tournament so far. Their first real test comes tonight when the unpredictable West Indies come up against them.
India's top bowlers have given away runs in 10s and 15s in the death overs. In the warm-up match against New Zealand, India had the Kiwis reeling at 124 for 6 but then gave away 41 runs in the last 3 overs. Pakistan also succeeded in steeling 37 runs in the dying moments of their innings. Even minnows Bangladesh and Ireland got the better of India bowlers at the fag end of their innings, putting up a competitive total. But MS Dhoni's bowlers will not have the luxury to take it easy in the death overs against the mighty West Indies.
India also need to be careful since they have never faced the West Indies in a Twenty20 encounter. But they will draw inspiration from the fact that while Chris Gayle's team relished the pace of Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson, they struggled against the quality spin bowling of Sri Lanka. Apparently the India spin duo of Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh will have a bigger role to play tonight.
With crucial players like Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, Daniel Vettori and Kevin Pietersen nursing injuries, is the slam-bang version of cricket starting to take its toll on the players? You know where to write in with your thoughts. Write in to us at: fanspeak@espnstar.co.in
