Pak media congratulates team

Following Pakistan’s historic win in the ICC World T20, the country’s newspapers reflected the unbridled joy of the people.

The headline in ‘The Nation' ran "Boom Boom Pakistan", as the paper extolled the team that "had a part of its country burning, that had been stripped of its World Cup 2011 rights, and yet had the chutzpah to conquer the world and with such aplomb".

According to ‘The News', Pakistan's triumph was unlike any other because it has lifted the people out of a "perpetual pall of depressive gloom".

"They danced on the same streets where they had been mourning their dead, lighting candles for martyrs of extremism. For one beautiful day, it felt great to be mentally free, felt proud to be a Pakistani," reported ‘The News'.

Expectedly, spirits in the Lankan nation were low.

The ‘Daily Mirror' newspaper's headline lamented, "Sri Lanka exposed in doomsday climax", and the paper said the team had "brought to zero the glamour and expectations they brought along into the final".

‘The Island' criticised the team's batting, and singled out Mahela Jayawardene for not rising to the occasion. It said while Jayawardene is often compared to Aravinda de Silva, but "de Silva thrived on the big occasion under pressure, whereas Jayawardene is yet to stamp his authority, showing his big match temperament".

‘The Island' however did congratulate Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq for their excellent showing, calling them the "forgotten heroes of Pakistan cricket".
