Irani Cup: Tendulkar pulls out

Sachin Tendulkar has withdrawn from the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup after failing to recover from the elbow injury.

Tendulkar, who was to play the match against Delhi at Baroda from September 24 to 28, is likley to be replaced by a India 'A' player after the team's match against New Zealand 'A' in Chennai on Sunday.

The Master Blaster underwent a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore on Friday and was advised more rest.

Tendulkar injured his left elbow during the Test series in Sri Lanka, which also forced to miss the ODI series in the islan nation.

While he will not figure in the Irani Cup, he is expected to be fully fit for the first Test against Bangalore beginning on October 9.

Anil Kumble will lead Rest of India against Delhi in the five-day tie.

The BCCI had earlier announced that the five-day Irani Cup tie would be a trial match to pick the Indian team for the Test series against Australia.

The present National Selection Committee comprising Dilip Vengarkar, Sanjay Jagdale, Venkatapathy Raju, Bhupinder Singh and Ranjib Biswal will meet for the last time in Baroda on September 23.

They will also pick the BCCI President's XI for the four-day warm-up game against Australia to be played at Hyderabad from October 2 to 5 and the India 'A' team for the two-match Test series against New Zealand 'A' to be played at Chennai.
