Former India all-rounder Roger Binny has been appointed as the coach of the Bengal cricket team for the next Ranji Trophy season.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) took the decision after a working committee meeting at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

"Binny has been appointed as the senior Bengal team coach. He was here few days ago and we had long discussions about the nitty gritties. He has agreed to coach our senior side," CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya said after the parley.

Binny, who had played a crucial role in India's 1983 World Cup triumph, has been offered a one-season contract for replacing Utpal Chatterjee, whose stint with the CAB had gone into rough weather.

However, contract of another former India cricketer Mohinder Amarnath, who was working as a consultant to the side, could not be renewed for his television commentary commitment.

Further details of the contract with the new coach is yet to be chalked out, Dalmiya said, adding that Binny who had also worked with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) as a development officer in 2007, will join Bengal next month.

"At present, we have given him one-season contract. He was with ACC and is perfect for the role. We will seek his help for our junior team as well," Dalmiya said.
