AIPSSPB out of contention
All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board (AIPSSPB) have crashed out of the inaugural BCCI Corporate Cup.
Heavy rain washed out their crucial Group C match against Indian Oil at Dharamsala on Wednesday.
Steady rain and wet outfield at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium forced umpires Ameesh Saheeba and Rajesh Deshpande to abandon the match without a ball being bowled and both the sides were awarded two points apiece.
With the cancellation of the match, AIPSSPB is out of contention for a semifinal berth as they had lost their tournament opener against Tata SC on Tuesday.
Indian Oil still has a chance to progress to the September 6 semifinal in Mohali if they beat Tata SC in their do-or-die final Group C match on Thursday.
In case Thursday's match is also washed out, Tata SC will make it to the semifinals, courtesy their emphatic 71-run victory over AIPSSPB in the rain-truncated encounter.
Persistent rain had cast a shadow over the entire Group C leg of the tournament. The teams, which arrived on Monday, did not even get enough chance to practise as the continuous downpour kept them largely confined to their hotel rooms.
After a clear and bright sky this morning, heavy rains lashed the serene hill town just before AIPSSPB captain Debashis Mohanty and his Indian Oil counterpart Wasim Jaffer were about to walk into the middle for the toss, leaving the entire outfield water-logged.
After an hour's shower, the sky did cleared and the ground-staff worked in full force with the help of super-sopper and wipers to make it conducive for playing.
Their best effort notwithstanding, wet patches in the outfield rendered the ground unplayable.
Hoping to stage at least a 20-over match, the ground-staff pressed into service blowers and sprayed saw-dust but that was not enough to make the ground fit for play.
Umpires Ameesh Saheeba and Rajesh Deshpande first inspected the ground at 5.30 p.m. and had a final look at 7.00 pm before deciding to abandon the match.
