"Rasool was made a scapegoat"

The J&K chief minister said today that cricketer Parvez Rasool, who was detained in Bangalore, was made a "scapegoat".

"It is not that we are silent on this. We have been on the job the moment we received the news about the arrest," said chief minister Omar Abdullah.

There was some defect in the (bag scanning) machine (at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore) and Parvez was made a scapegoat and arrested mistakenly", Omar told reporters.

He said "we have spoken to different states that they should be sensitive while dealing with such cases because already there are various wounds".

He said the J&K government was in touch with Karnataka government over the detention of the two J&K cricketers.

Parvez Rasool and Mehrajuddin, members of the state team for an under-22 cricket tournament, were detained in Bangalore on Saturday after traces of explosives were allegedly found in their kit bag but were subsequently released after questioning by the police for lack of evidence.

The incident caused strong resentment among sport lovers here as well as Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association which demanded an apology from Bangalore Police for "harassing" the young cricketers.

Rasool's brother Asif meanwhile accused the Bangalore police of high handedness saying the cricketer was detained for objecting to the use of sniffer dog to check his bag which had the holy Quran in it.
