Wankhede renovation faces controversy

The Wankhede Stadium renovation for the 2011 World Cup has run into a controversy, this time with the Heritage Committee.

The Committe is against the height of the stands to accomodate more spectators.

"We have not taken any decision on the proposal (received from Wankhede owners Mumbai Cricket Association to increase the height of the stadium). No member has written to me opposing it," Heritage Committee Chairman Sharad Upasani said while reacting to newspaper reports.

The recommendation for restructuring the stadium has been sent to the Committee as it falls in the proposed heritage area of the scenic Queen's Necklace in Marine Drive.

MCA sources, on their part, could not decipher how raising the height of the stadium could be opposed by the panel as they felt it would, in no way, affect the view from the periphery of the arena.

"Only if you go deep into the sea will the stadium, after it undergoes renovation, be visible but not from close as it's surrounded by tall buildings," they said.

Significantly the architect in charge of the stadium's redevelopment, Sashi Prabhu, is a member of the Heritage Committee, they added.
