Dalmiya makes a clean sweep
Jagmohan Dalmiya won back the presidentship of the Cricket Association of Bengal beating incumbent Prasun Mukherjee.
The former BCCI chief beat the former Police Commissioner of Kolkata 71 votes to 47 on Tuesday.
Dalmiya said cricket in the state required an administrator like him and that was the main reason he was back at the helm of affairs. He also said that there was a lot of work to be done since Bengal had been relegated to the Plate Division of the Ranji tournament.
"Cricket in the state needs me, that's why I'm back. I'll require a couple of days to sit down with colleagues and, then, chalk out plans," he said.
"Initially, I wanted to make a comeback so that I could emerge without a blemish (reference to the cases slapped by the BCCI), but that changed once Bengal got relegated to the Plate Division in the Ranji Trophy. Nothing personal is a priority; today, there's much work to do," he added.
What made this win extra special for former BCCI chief was the way the entire panel regained its positions. All the new president's men - Biswarup Dey, Arun Mitra (both joint-secretaries) and Bablu Ganguly (treasurer), completed the rout for Dalmiya.
Mukherjee and Company were questioned on various fronts. From Bengal's relegation to questionable payments to the accounts of the seven Indian Premier League matches at the Eden. All issues were raised by Goutam Das Gupta, Chitrak Mitra and Naresh Ojha who are said to be the major architects of this mammoth victory.
Prasun Mukherjee, who was a bit surprised and upset over the results, wished Dalmiya all the best and said he did not want to ponder over the reasons now.
"The members wanted Dalmiya back and this mandate is overwhelmingly in his favour. I have nothing to say and I congratulate Dalmiya and wish him all the best," he said.
"But this result is unexpected for me and I have not really understood why this happened. I don't want to go into the reasons," he added.
