Profile:
Having already deputised for Michael Vaughan as England captain in 2006, Andrew Strauss was appointed on a permanent basis for the 2008/09 tour of the West Indies, following Kevin Pietersen's resignation.
Strauss captained the England team to a 2–1 victory in the 2009 Ashes, scoring a series-high 474 runs. It included 161 in England's first victory in an Ashes Test at Lord's in 75 years. The following year, he led a successful Ashes defence in Australia, triumphing 3-1 to end a 24-year wait for victory Down Under.
Under Strauss, England have become one of the few teams capable of challenging India’s position as the best test team in the world.
