Andrew Strauss’ resignation as the ODI captain brought Alastair Cook into the hot seat in May 2011, despite not having featured in an ODI since leading the side in Bangladesh at the start of 2010.
In his first official assignment as captain, he guided England to a 3-2 win against Sri Lanka in the ODIs in June – a fitting riposte to those who said he was not a suitable candidate to lead the limited overs side.
Surprisingly, the England opener has featured in just 31 one-day internationals, but has been in sensational form in tests since the 2010-11 Ashes. He became the youngest Englishman to reach 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 Test runs and will be looking to carry over his form into the ODIs.
