Jimmy backs Sourav for Oz call-up
Former all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath says he is confident Ganguly will find a place in the Test team against Australia.
Refusing to read too much into the Ganguly's omission from the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy, the newly-appointed Bengal consultant, Amarnath, asked, "Why do you think that he is not there for the Test squad against Australia? I'm very sure that Ganguly would figure in India's Test scheme of things.
"We should stick to the 'tried-and-tested' ones. The squad should have a proper blend of youth and experience. Let them give chance initially and then it's up to their performance whether they keep themselves in the squad."
Asked about Ganguly's poor performance in the India-Sri Lanka series, the 1983 World Cup hero said, "One bad series can't make you a bad batsman. Our batsman failed to spinners in the Sri Lanka series. I don't think Australian spinners are as good as Sri Lanka so I don't see any reason why Ganguly should not figure in the squad."
A known comeback man himself, the 57-year-old Amarnath, whose career was laced with several dropouts and then fighting his way back into the national side with stellar performances, said, Ganguly is the real comeback man. "Ups and downs are part and parcel of a sportsman's life. Ganguly knows that very well and he does not need any advice."
