"Modern coaching is too scientific"
G R Viswanath feels modern cricket coaching has become "too scientific" which does not allow natural talent to grow.
Former Indian batsman Viswanath, who is also the batting consultant of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is here to oversee the under-19 zonal coaching being held at the RCA academy.
He said "wristy" players like VVS Laxman and Mohammad Azharuddin are not there to be seen anymore as coaching has become too scientific.
"Cricket coaching has become too scientific and there is less scope to follow the natural talent. We need to spot the natural ability and cultivate it. It is more of in born and has to maintained," said Viswanath.
On India's chances of defending the Twenty20 World Cup title in England, Viswanath said the team had the balance needed to do well at the tournament.
"The whole complexion of the game can change in two overs. But I still feel that the Indian team is balanced and capable of delivering," he said.
Viswanath also rejected suggestions that playing in the Indian Premier League has left Indian players jaded.
"Modern cricketers are professionals. Even if there is any injury problem we have a good backup. Yuvraj (Singh) and Zaheer (Khan) will recover soon. The IPL is good for cricket. Though this form of cricket affects basics of the youngsters it should carry on. But the real test comes from Test cricket," he said.
