Punter wants to skipper IPL side

Ricky Ponting seems to have taken a leaf out of Adam Gilchrist's book that pertains to captaincy in IPL teams.

The Australian captain, who turned out for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, said on Tuesday that he would definitely like to lead the side in the Indian T20 domestic competition once he has more time.

"I would love to lead the team in the IPL. I thoroughly enjoyed myself during the matches I played for Kolkata. But I can consider the role only when I am not playing international cricket; right now I need to keep touring," he said.

Many experts have noted that the IPL is becoming a pension fund for former Aussie cricketers and Ponting's comment will just strengthen that notion.

Sources told espnstar.com that the Aussie skipper had in fact been offered the captaincy of the Kolkata Knight Riders but turned it down because he did not have the time to play the full tournament.

The prolific batsman was also very appreciative of the move by the Deccan Chargers to apppoint former teammate Adam Gilchrist as their skipper and Darren Lehmann as coach.

"I think Gilchrist as captain is a great appointment. He did a good job every time he got the opportunity to lead the team. He's got a winning culture.

"Lehmann as coach and Gilchrist will make an excellent pair. I am sure both the Deccan Chargers and Gilchrist were not happy with the outcome in the first year and the present move will surely help them turnaround things in the second edition," he observed.
