Sehwag lets his hair down

Sehwag lets his hair down

espnstar.com's Rajarshi Gupta digs out the funny side of Delhi Daredevils Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

A sizzling night, a celebrity singer and a buzz in the air. It was time to wish Delhi's favourite lads for one last time before they set sail for South Africa for the second edition of the IPL.

A select gathering in a Gurgaon pub, on the outskirts of New Delhi waited with abated breath for the heroes to arrive. And after a long wait, they did and how!

Enter Gambhir, looking resplendent in a Daredevil jersey. Minutes later, strode in the leader of the pack, Sehwag, accompanied by a heavy set and visibly enthused bouncer to keep the fans and media at bay, who in turn was followed by a less heroic Amit Mishra, (remember the leggie, who grabbed a hat-trick in the last IPL and snatched five Australian wickets in Mohali on debut?) and the drum was ready to roll.

In came the glam quotient, with a guitar and a husky voice. The mood was set when a usually reserved Gambhir, allowed himself a hint of a smile.

The temperature was rising as were the chants. Prodded a little further, Gambhir, known for his angry outbursts on the field, said he has had enough. "One ban is enough for me. I can do without another one."

It was not long before the Nawab was finally hailed. Sehwag, looking as calm and composed as he does on the field when he rips apart bowling attacks with the tenacity of a butcher, dropped a bomb.

"We let Shikhar Dhawan go. He cannot hit sixes so we decided to send him to Mumbai Indians," Sehwag said, his wry smile firmly in place.

What followed was an open challenge to his Delhi teammate, who was traded with another Delhi buddy, Ashish Nehra.

How about the multi captain theory? "No comments," chirped Sehwag.

Do you support it? "No comments," chirped Sehwag again, his languid look just the same.

The dart changed course and headed for Mishra, the young turk, still finding his feet amongst legends.

What do you think of John Buchanan's theory? Mishy, not as accomplished a batsman as his captain, decided not to duck the bouncer and that sparked off smirks from Gambhir and Sehwag.

"Well, I think....," began Mishra when the power supply went for a nap and the smirks from the world's most fearsome opening combination churned out to well suppressed laughter.

"Well, I think every team should have only one captain and he should be strong enough to take decisions, Mishra finally got to finish after a couple of minutes. The captain smiled some more and nodded like a man content. A sight to behold.

And then they were on their way home. The poise and calm on the faces were back again.
