Spinners making merry on SA pitches

The second edition of the Indian Premier League is coming out to be a better contest between bat and the ball than the last year.

While the spinners are making merry on the tired pitches of South Africa, the part time spinners have joined the party too.

With spinners are ruling the roost in IPL II, it's the part-time spinners who have given batsmen sleepless nights.

Rohit Sharma for Deccan Chargers and Suresh Raina for Chennai Super Kings have not only been amongst the run-getters, they have an impressive economy of less than six an over. And JP Duminy of Mumbai has conceded just 53 runs from 11 overs.

Former Indian spinner, Erapally Prasanna, says, "A part-timer's ball comes slowly to the bat, they don't have pace and batsman already make a commitment to play in the front foot because of pressure to score and in the process lose wickets."

The only two hat-tricks in this IPL II have gone to part time spinners -- Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh. Among the genuine spinners, only Pragyan Ojha, Muttiah Muralitharan, Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra have bowled at less than six an over. Even Anil Kumble, Shane
Warne and Daniel Vettori have gone for above six an over.

Former Indian wicket keeper, Syed Kirmini, feels part-timers stick to basics as they don't know much about the finers points of bowling as a genuine spinner does.

"They don't try to too much and reap results of that," he added.

So with the part-timer spinners spoiling the party for the batsmen, it's time to take them seriously.
