"Symmo deserves a place in Aus squad"

Darren Lehmann feels it is the right time to include Andrew Symonds in the Australian squad for the Ashes tour.

The Deccan Chargers coach Lehmann is impressed with the the swashbuckling all-rounder's performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Symonds had a forgettable last summer and though he returned to international cricket stealthily, many felt he was never in contention for a place in the Test squad to England, which is to be named on Wednesday.

However, Lehmann, who fashioned the Chargers return in the IPL-II after a disastrous outing last year, believes Symonds has regained his lost touch and deserves a place in the Australian line up.

"He's good, he's in good nick, he's enjoying cricket and enjoying being with us, and I'm sure he'd enjoy being back with Australia as well," Lehmann told AAP.

Symonds has so far accumulated 174 runs and also scalped three wickets in five IPL matches.

"Very much so, very much so, I've been very impressed with him," Lehmann said.

"He knows the bowlers well, he's played against England many a time, and he's in form - at the moment I can honestly say he is in form - he's batting really well, and if they pick him it'd be great for him.

"The Australian side is still a better side with him in it," he added.
