Gilly to consider IPL options

Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist still intends to travel to the IPL despite threats against Australian players, his manager has said.

The Shiv Sena group, a far right Indian political party, has promised to prevent Australians playing cricket in India's major commercial city Mumbai in revenge for attacks on Indian students in Australia.

The IPL is due to begin on March 12 with Gilchrist set to fly to the country to help the Deccan Chargers defend the title they won last year.

Gilchrist's manager, Stephen Atkinson, did admit though that the 38-year-old veteran of 96 Tests would be guided by security checks conducted by Cricket Australia.

"Adam is aware of the situation and he is always very mindful of the security concerns in India," Atkinson said.

"Adam was looking to play in this year's tournament, but it is always a worry when statements made like that are being made.

"Ultimately, he will be guided by the views of Cricket Australia and security experts.

"He is intending to go, but any final decision is subject to the travel and security advice of Cricket Australia and the ACA (Australian Cricketers' Association)."

Last year's IPL was moved to South Africa after the tournament clashed with national elections in India.

The security of players could not be guaranteed to prompt the move and the latest threat could undermine the tournament with the likes of Australia captain Ricky Ponting and his countrymen Shane Watson, Andrew Symonds and Matthew Hayden also contracted to franchises.

The threat to the players was made by Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray, 82, who wrote in his party publication Saamna: "We will not allow kangaroo cricketers to play in Mumbai and Maharashtra, till the attacks on Indians are stopped.

"Our boys are being stabbed, burnt and shot at in that country and still our cricketers have no qualms in playing with them. Do they have any national pride?"
