Cricketing action shifts to Delhi

Delhi boys return home after a successful pair of outings, putting it past Hyderabad and Jaipur sides to be very happily placed indeed.

A 'tailor-made' organisation. That's what one veteran India player calls the Delhi cricket administrators, referring, rather uncharitably, to the garment export business run by one of the DDCA big guns. So naturally, such an organisation would have a tailor-made pitch as well. Nothing uncharitable here, or almost nothing, since the chappie assigned to look after the track is a guy who used to supply cricketing clothes to the Delhi teams and assorted other clubs and even to the hacks, for their apologetic cricket.

This is where the action shifts for the Delhi as the boys return home after a very successful pair of outings indeed, putting it past Hyderabad and Jaipur sides to be very happily placed indeed. Never ones to be too modest the Delhi boys are walking with an arrogant strut, emphasised by a very fluent performance with the ball, with all the boys, ranging from the fiery Dirk Nannes to young Sarabjit Ladda coming good.

Once they have done their bit, in come new skipper Gautam Gambhir and the inimitable Virender Sehwag and the opposition is ducking for cover.

It was first Gambhir's effort against the Hyderabad outfit in the first game. With all due respects to Yusuf Pathan, the Delhi left-hander possibly played the best innings of this edition of the tournament so far, stitching together a neat score when there were chances that his side may go down. Then, against the Jaipur boys, Sehwag settled the issue well before the scheduled close.

That is the ideal scenario we are speaking of. I wonder how things would change if a side were to score 160-odd against the Delhi boys. One would like to think they would still win, but it could well be an intriguing contest. For one, Delhi, for all their confidence, made really heavy weather of the first match against Hyderabad and even in the last match, there was a situation where they seemed to lose a bit of steam.

Arrogance is great when you are is a position of advantage, as Gambhir and his boys have been so far. But come the match against Mumbai come Wednesday, things may be a little different, simply because Mumbai is, well, Mumbai. A bit of humility may not be too out of place while taking on Sachin Tendulkar and his boys.

We tend to get carried away a wee too quickly, especially when it comes to cricket. According to one bright spark in the official TV programme, Delhi are "on a roll". Two games played out of 14 and on a roll! A rollback happened to them last time after they had won eight on the trot, so no ladies and gentlemen, they are not on a roll yet.

This stuff can be great fun. Pathan partied on moderate offerings from the bowlers, Chaminda Vaas had two in an over, twice, including the first over of the tournament, players have been whacked by fast bowlers (a la Harbhajan Singh) and players have whacked fast bowlers (a la Sehwag). Quite a party. Not to be taken too seriously. Enjoy it while it lasts.
