Promised to be a money spinning factory, IPL season three has incurred a deficit of 39 crore as against 15 crore surplus in 2008-09.

Documents in possession with SportsCenter shows that total income for the year 2009-10 by the cash rich Indian Premier League has swelled to Rs. 803 cr from Rs. 661 cr in the year 2008-09. A significant jump of Rs. 142 cr, but it is the over all expenditure on various counts that has taken a beating on IPL profit this year.

Quite notably, league expenses have gone up to Rs. 65 cr as against Rs. 50 cr last year. Similarly stadium branding expenses is pegged to rupees 15 cr as compare to rupees 6 cr last year.

That’s not the end of the story. IPL-3's star filled opening and closing ceremony too has dented its coffer. A total of rupees eighteen crore was spent on the two ceremonies held in South Africa against the rupees seven crore in the season two in India.

But the mother of all expenses has turned out to be entertainment and hospitality cost at rupees 33 crore, a clear and steep jump from the one held in India. Even the administrative cost saw an upward jump, going to whopping rupees 78 crore against the rupees 47 crore.

However, BCCI’s grant to all the associations from TV revenue remained the same at Rs. 202 crore.
