India vs SL 3rd Test: Day 4 highlights

A look at the stats highlights of fourth day's play of the third Test between India and Sri Lanka at the PSS in Colombo.

- Sri Lanka's triumph by eight wickets over India is their fourth successive victory at Colombo, PSS as under:

- Sri Lanka's victory is the sixth at this venue out of 12 played. (Lost 2 and Drawn 4) - winning % 50.00.

- Sri Lanka's aforesaid win is their second over India in three Tests at Colombo, PSS. Their previous win at this venue was by 149 runs in September 1985. The 1993-94 Test could not produce a result.

- Sri Lanka's series win by 2-1 is their second successive against India in Sri Lanka. They had won by a similar margin in 2001-02.

- Overall, Sri Lanka's aforesaid series win is their third against India in Sri Lanka, maintaining their unbeaten home Test series record against India since 1993. Their first Test series win against India in Sri Lanka was by 1-0 in 1985-86.

- Mahela Jayawardene recorded his 13th win in 24 Tests as captain - winning % 54.16 (Lost 7 and Drawn 4). Jayawardene's winning % is the best amongst Sri Lankan captains.

- India's defeat at Colombo (PSS) is their fifth in 15 Tests against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka (Won 3 and Drawn 7).

- India have now lost two successive Test series away from home. Their previous series defeat was against Australia by 1-2.

- Under Anil Kumble's captaincy, India have won 3, lost 5 and drawn 4 out of 12 - winning % 25.00.

- Muttiah Muralitharan is now the third bowler to claim 400 wickets or more for a winning cause - 404 at an average of 14.58 in 49 Tests. The top three bowlers are two Australians - Shane Warne (510 wickets in 92 Tests) & Glenn McGrath (414 in 84) and Muralitharan (404 in 49).

- Rahul Dravid (68) recorded his first fifty in ten innings. After posting 111 against South Africa at Chennai in March 2008, his sequence of scores have been 3, 17, 29, 18*, 14, 10, 2, 44, 10 and 68.

- Dravid's aforesaid innings is his 30th fifty away from home - his 52nd in Test cricket.

- Dravid's 8th fifty against Sri Lanka is his fourth in Sri Lanka.

- VVS Laxman completed his 6,000 runs in Test Cricket in 158 innings at an average of 43.79. He is the eighth Indian batsman to accomplish the feat, joining Sachin Tendulkar (11877), Rahul Dravid (10246), Sunil Gavaskar (10122), Sourav Ganguly (6888), Dilip Vengsarkar (6868), Mohammad Azharuddin (6215) and Gundappa Viswanath(6080).

- VVS Laxman's 35th Test fifty is his third against Sri Lanka.

- Laxman's aforesaid innings is his 20th fifty away from home.

- Laxman (61 not out) registered his highest score against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, bettering his 56 at Colombo,SSC in 2005-06.

- VVS Laxman's aggregate of 215 at an average of 43.00 is the third best for India in the just concluded series, next only to Virender Sehwag (344) and Gautam Gambhir (310).

- Dravid and Laxman put on 85 runs - India's second best for the sixth wicket at Colombo, PSS, next only to the 90 between Sunil Gavaskar and Mohinder Amarnath in 1985-86.

- The aforesaid partnership is India's highest in the Test. Overall, the said stand is the second best in the Test, next only to the 95-run partnership between Chaminda Vaas and Kumar Sangakkara for the third wicket.

- India's total of 268 is their highest second innings total at Colombo (PSS), eclipsing their 198 in September 1985.

- Anil Kumble has averaged 4.83 as a batsman in the series - 29 runs in six innings. In his previous Test series against South Africa, he had averaged 2.66 - 8 runs in three innings.

- Harbhajan Singh posted his highest score of the series.

- Harbhajan's 26 is his second best score in Sri Lanka - his highest being 44 at Kandy in 2001-02.

- Laxman and Harbhajan were associated in a stand of 37 for the eighth wicket - India's second best for this wicket-position at this venue, next only to the 70 between Kapil Dev and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan in 1985-86.

- Michael Vandort has averaged 7.80 in the series - 39 runs in five innings.

- Vandort's wicket was Harbhajan's 40th in 8 Tests in 2008. He is the fourth bowler this year to have claimed 40 wickets or more, joining Dale Steyn (52), Ryan Sidebottom (47), James Anderson (42).

- The last instance when Harbhajan Singh bagged 40 wickets or more in a calendar year was 2002 - 63 at 23.22 runs apiece.

- Mendis, the leading wicket-taker in the series with 26 wickets at 18.38 runs apiece, has justifiably been adjudged the Man of the Series.

- Muralitharan's tally of 21 wickets at 22.23 runs apiece is the second best in the series.

- Mahela Jayawardene's 32nd fifty in Test Cricket is his seventh against India.

- Jayawardene, with 279 runs at an average of 69.75, including one century and two fifties, is the leading run-getter for Sri Lanka in the series.

- Warnapura posted his fourth fifty - his second against India.

- Sangakkara's 9th Man of the Match award his first against India.
