Harsha hails Dhoni impact

Expert commentator Harsha Bhogle feels MS Dhoni is currently the best ODI batsman in India given his calm temperament.

Speaking to Mobile ESPN after India's 33 run win over Sri Lanka at the Premadasa in Colombo on Sunday, Harsha said: "The more I look at Dhoni, I get the feeling that he is India's best ODI batsman and not Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir or even for that matter Virender Sehwag when he is in the side."

"Dhoni has this instinct of finishing games and plays till the end. He brings about that sense of calm at the crease that you would asscociate with batsmen of past eras."

Harsha said India's best chances against Sri Lanka lay in doing what they did to do them in Dambulla in the second ODI.

"India got rid of the Lankan top order in Dambulla and Colombo on Sunday. I am increasingly beginning to sense that once the top three in the Sri Lankan batting order are dismissed early, the rest of the batting tends to come under a little bit of pressure."

Harsha also acknowledged the kind of difference Zaheer Khan is making with the new ball: "India must be feeling nice with the kind of form Zaheer is showing at the moment."

"Dhoni must be also happy that another of his gambles has paid off after the way Praveen Kumar bowled. He again got wickets."

"Munaf Patel is the ideal bowler to come behind the new ball."

The seasoned cricket commentator opined India's ploy of playing only four bowlers paid off after Zaheer and Praveen ripped through the Lankan top order inside the first 10 overs.

"India took early wickets with the new ball and paradoxically, even though Sri Lanka have been losing wickets up the order, they have been scoring more runs down the order but they are coming after the match has already been lost."

Harsha thought Sri Lanka had a bit of a chance after pulling India down to 100 for four at one stage after a decent opening partnership between Gambhir and Virat Kohli.

"However, the moment India got 238, I felt we had a bit of a chance. It was indeed a good win and a rare one given India's record at the Premadasa."

Harsha is still not sure about the current team combination.

"I am not yet sure if India have the ideal combination but that is a call the Indians have to take, whether to go in with four or five bowlers."

India face Sri Lanka on Tuesday for the crucial fourth match.
