India coasted to a 46-run win over Sri Lanka in the fourth one-day international at the Premadasa Stadium to clinch the series.

Speedster Munaf Patel and spinners Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh shared seven wickets.

Sanath Jayasuriya (60) threatened to make short work of India's target of 259, but his dismissal, coupled with failures at the top of the order from Kumar Sangakkara (six) and Malinda Warnapura (nought) meant Sri Lanka were bowled out for 212 in 46.3 overs.

The victory, India's third in succession, helped the visitors secure their first bilateral series win in Sri Lanka in four visits to the island nation.

Opening batsman Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had each hit half centuries as India piled up a target which eventually proved out of Mahela Jayawardene's side's reach.

In reply, Jayasuriya ploughed a lone furrow at the top of the order as wickets tumbled around him.

Warnapura was dismissed for an 18-ball duck and Sangakkara followed suit shortly later, inside-edging a delivery from Munaf onto his stumps.

Jayawardene was then the victim of an unfortunate mix-up and was run out for 16, while Chamara Kapugedera (30) and Tillekaratne Dilshan (12) fell to dubious lbw decisions as the Sri Lankan innings folded.

Thilan Thushara, who had earlier claimed a five wicket haul, smashed a quickfire 40 at the end, but it was too little too late for the Sri Lankans.

Harbhajan finished with three for 40, while Munaf had figures of two for 48 and Yuvraj two for 53.

Raina (76) and Dhoni (71) had flayed the Sri Lankan bowling with a blistering 143-run fourth-wicket partnership while Kohli's 54 marked his maiden ODI half-century.

Thushara claimed the wicket of each of India's leading run-scorers, and mopped up the visitors' misfiring tail to claim a career-best five for 47 as India were bowled out two balls shy of their allotted 50 overs.

Along the way Chaminda Vaas became only the fourth bowler in one-day cricket to claim 400 wickets when he dismissed Yuvraj for a duck.

Openers Kohli and Gautam Gambhir put on 44 runs for the first wicket but the latter fell for 17 while attempting to up the run-rate, slashing at Nuwan Kulasekara's delivery and succeeding only in finding Dilshan at backward point.

Yuvraj then fell for a six-ball duck while Kohli was dismissed shortly after reaching his 50 from 62 balls, Thushara claiming his first scalp as the batsman played onto the stumps.

Kohli's dismissal left India wobbling on 81 for three but Dhoni and Raina came together to take the tourists beyond the 200 mark.

Dhoni played an energetic innings, hitting just four boundaries on his way to 71 from 80 balls, while Raina was more assertive at the crease, smashing six boundaries and a six before holing out to Kulasekara at long-off to become Thushara's second victim.

Thushara dismissed Dhoni just two overs later, the India skipper caught by Sanath Jayasuriya at short cover, and with it went the tourists' hopes of posting a commanding total.

The India innings quickly crumbled with the dismissals of the fourth-wicket partners, the middle order and tail contributing just 26 further runs, but ultimately the total was enough for a convincing win.
