Pak urged to give up Champs Trophy
The Pakistan Cricket Board should give up the rights the host the Champions Trophy according to former ICC chief Ehsan Mani.
The Champions Trophy, which was scheduled to be held from September 12-28 in Lahore and Karachi, was postponed by 13 months by the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to security concerns, although Pakistan still retain the rights to host the tournament.
But Mani, who was Pakistan's representative at the ICC for several years, said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should step aside.
"It was known well in advance that some teams would not tour Pakistan," Mani said. "The PCB ought to have taken the initiative and had the tournament shifted to an alternative venue rather than have it postponed.
"Had the tournament been shifted, the ICC could have earned approximately $50 million and every participating team would have had their share of $3.75 million each.
"But by postponing or cancelling the tournament, the PCB would lose anywhere between $5 and $10 million."
Pakistan have also suffered severe financial losses this year after Australia postponed a scheduled tour in March.
"In my opinion, the PCB should have relinquished hosting rights for the Champions Trophy and instead demanded the rights to host perhaps the 2012 Champions Trophy or the 2013 Twenty20 World Cup," added Mani.
"The ICC have not yet allocated venues for these events and the situation would be normal in Pakistan again.
"The PCB can still surrender its rights at the ICC executive committee meeting currently on in Dubai. They still have the time to do it."
