WICB leaves door open for Marshall
The WICB has said Xavier Marshall will still be eligible to play international cricket even if he is found guilty of drugs abuse.
Marshall, who has played four Tests for the West Indies, and uncapped Leeward Islands all-rounder Tonito Willett both failed drug tests during a two-week training camp ahead of the upcoming Stanford Superstars series.
In the wake of that news Marshall was dropped from the Superstars squad early last week while Willett had already been culled from the original 32-man squad.
Dr Peters said the governing body had no jurisdiction to prevent 22-year-old Marshall from playing international cricket again if he is found guilty of using drugs as the samples were provided while the player was with the Superstars team.
"Our position is we understand that Marshall and Willett have tested positive through reports on [cricket website] Cricinfo, but that we can not take any action against them since they are not players on a retained contract with the WICB," Dr Peters told the Trinidad & Tobago Express.
"In fact, they were part of the Stanford Twenty20 camp so that is not a matter for us to deal with."
When asked if a failed drug test would prevent either player from playing for West Indies, Dr Peters said: "No, they would not unless they are selected to the West Indies team and test positive in our tests, because the WICB has a drug testing programme in place.
"If the Jamaica Cricket Association chooses him [Marshall] then he will be available for selection to the West Indies where he will undergo testing in our programme."
Confirmation that two players had failed a drugs test at the Superstars camp was made public last week.
Dr Adrian Lorde, chairman of Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation, the agency contracted to conduct the tests, told the Barbados Nation: "We did drug tests and there were two adverse analytical findings - which is the equivalent to two positive tests."
Organisers of the Stanford Twenty20 series declined to comment on the matter when contacted by PA Sport.
