Ind vs Aus, 1st Test: Day 1 highlights
A look at the stats highlights of the first day's play in the first Test between India and Australia at Bangalore on Thursday.
- Playing in his 200th Test innings, Ricky Ponting recorded his 36th hundred - his sixth against India and his first in India.
- Matthew Hayden, David Boon and Ricky Ponting, with 6 centuries each against India, now share the Australian record for most Test centuries against India.
- Ponting's tally of 36 centuries is exceeded only by India's Sachin Tendulkar (39).
- Ponting's 123 off 243 balls is his highest score against India in India, eclipsing his 60 at Kolkata in 1997-98.
- Ponting's aforesaid hundred is his 16th as captain, setting a record for most Test hundreds as skipper, surpassing the feat of Allan Border and Steve Waugh, who both had registered 15 hundreds as captain.
- Ponting is averaging 62.87 as Captain (4401 in 45 Tests) - the best amongst the captains with 4,000 runs or in Test Cricket. Lara (57.84), Greg Chappell (55.38), Clive Lloyd (51.30), and Border (50.95) have maintained an average of 50-plus.
- In his previous nine Test innings against India in India, Ponting's highest was just 16 at Bangalore in 1997-98.
- When his score reached 24, Ponting moved past Sunil Gavaskar's aggregate of 10,122 in 125 Tests.
- Harbhajan has dismissed Ponting nine times in 10 Tests - the most times he has been dismissed by any bowler.
- Simon Katich (66 off 149 balls) posted his fifth fifty against India - his ninth in Test cricket.
- Katich, in nine Tests against India, has averaged 53.46 - 695 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 55.60, including one century and five fifties.
- Katich, in his last four innings, has recorded two centuries and one fifty - 113 vs West Indies at North Sound; 36 & 157 vs West Indies at Bridgetown and 66 against India at Bangalore in 2008.
- The 166-run stand for the second wicket between Katich and Ponting is Australia's best for this wicket-position at Bangalore, surpassing the 78 between Allan Border and Andrew Hilditch in 1979-80.
- The aforesaid partnership is now the second best by an Australian pair for the second wicket against India in India, next only to the 204 between Jim Burke and Neil Harvey at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai in 1956-57.
- The 166-run partnership is the second best by an Australian pair for any wicket at Bangalore, next only to the 167 between Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist for the sixth wicket in 2004-05.
- Matthew Hayden registered his first duck in India.
- Hayden, after posting 203 against India at Chepauk in 2000-01, has recorded only one fifty in his last ten innings in India. His sequence of scores in India has been 35, 26, 30, 58, 39, 23, 9, 35, 24 and 0
- Hayden's first duck against India in 28 innings is his 12th in Test Cricket.
- Prior to his duck today, Hayden had registered two back to back hundreds in Test Cricket - 123 at Sydney and 103 at Adelaide in 2007-08, both against India.
- Zaheer Khan has dismissed Hayden for the fifth time - once each in Brisbane (2003-304), Melbourne (2007-08) and Bangalore (2008-09) and twice in the 2004-05 Nagpur Test.
- Cameron White became the 402nd Australian player to make his Test debut.
